Episode 35 - Last Day That We're Young
So, what are we talking about this week, special guest Chris Hornbostel? "Last Day That We're Young?" by Game Theory? Could you please recount the fascinating story of how this album came to be, break down the musical arrangement and mastering process that makes the song so excellent, and then drop an awesomely prescient interpretation of the lyrics whilst tying them into a personal theme of aging, life, and death? Ok, thanks. I'll be over here looking up "opalescent".
Please very much enjoy!

BTW, just today someone posted Scott Miller's original scratch lyrics (basically what he wrote to have something to sing to the melody he was writing.) Kind of fun to compare:
ReplyDeleteWHEN SOME NEW WORLD COMES INTO FOCUS
SO PERFECT I HAD TO TURN AWAY
AND ALL THE BIG SECRETS I THOUGHT I HAD
SOMEONE HEARS AND SOMEONE KNOWS
TAKING THE FACE OF TYRANNY SERIOUSLY
IT MAKES YOU SO LOST YOU ONLY OBEY
AND TAKE ME WHO MIGHT AS WELL ENTER THIS ALL
INTO OTHER WORKS BEGUN
BUT I WON’T LET YOU DARE
OUR FRIEND WITH A MUTUAL “I KNOW HER.”
AND MAYBE WE DON’T
I MERELY LISTEN TO LET YOU INSIDE
TAKING THE FORCED LOVER LESS SERIOUSLY
ENOUGH TO GO CHANGING ONE OF HER GOALS
BUT KEEPING THE FEELING OF LOSS UP
MIXES STREAMS YOU LEARN TO CRY
BUT I WON’T LET YOU DOWN
I KNOW THEY WERE HERE TO SAY THEY TOLD YOU
I’M TAKING US ALL
I’LL BE WHAT YOU WANT AND NOT A STRANGER
I’LL BE ANYTHING
I WON’T LET YOU TRY TO DEFINE IT
I WON’T LET YOU FEEL IT AND THROW IT AWAY SO EASY
Nice, Chris. Those read as a lot sadder to me than the originals. I'd be curious to put them to the music for the full effect.
